Health & Safety
Health and Safety Plan
We strive to ensure that Sumas is a company with zero tolerance for conduct that not only protects Sumas employees, but also the public and the environment.
We are committed to health and safety of our people as well as our contractors, visitors, clients and communities. We focus on identifying and eliminating hazards,
reduce risks and improve the working conditions on and off-site. As a result, Sumas implements stringent safety protocols for its employees or other sub-contractors working under the Sumas umbrella. Implementation of such a program is only effective when all employees are fully aware of the protocols and procedures. Sumas strives to achieve this end by setting up worker/management meetings and the most up to date training for its entire staff and employees.

Protective Equipment

To prevent exposure to chemicals expected to be on the site, personnel will use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) appropriate to the situation. All field personnel will wear as a minimum modified level D personal protective equipment that may include protective gloves, CSA approved steel-toed chemical resistant boots, hard hats and eye protection.
Safety Policy
Sumas is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for our Team and others at all workplaces.
This will be accomplished through a comprehensive and compliant health and safety program.
Sumas will make every effort to prevent any accidents/incidents, injuries, and occupational illness from occurring.
This will be achieved through ongoing training and active participation of employees and contractors to identify hazards and manage the risks
continuously and effectively. Sumas will ensure accountability and responsibility is recognized at all levels
of the organization by Sumas employees and its contractors. Everyone is encouraged to work with management and prioritize safety at workplace/projects.

Safety Approval
No person will be admitted to the site without the proper safety equipment clearance or other approval. The onsite Health and Safety Officers will be responsible for ensuring that an accident prevention plan is implemented for each project. The Health and Safety Officer will also ensure that all personnel understand safety requirements through onsite briefings and will also be responsible for overall layout of the work area.
Frequent Inspection
The work area will frequently be inspected to ensure it is maintained in a neat and clean manner. All Sumas personnel have on-going training in WHMIS, TDG, First Aid and WCB regulations.
Certificate of Recognition
Sumas has a recognized safety program in place and received its first Certificate of Recognition (COR) in May 2018 from BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA).
Obtaining COR certificate is part of Sumas commitment to protecting the well being of workers and maintaining a safety culture at our workplaces.
Sumas has gone through several external and internal audits for its safety management system since 2018. COR audit addresses gaps in our safety program and Sumas takes required corrective actions to rectify potential deficiencies and improve its safety system after each safety audit.
